How do STROADs in town center Greenville harm the city?
As they stand today, they are car-only sewers where bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit users are utterly unwelcome. They therefore drastically reduce the per capita number of trips by bicycle, walking, and transit.
They destroy any hope of residences along them.
They create ear-splitting 24/7 noise pollution.
They are a Ponzi Scheme bankrupting city, state, and county governments because such downwardly-spiraling corridors fail to produce the tax revenue needed to pay for the services and harm they produce.
They induce a barbarically large number of deadly motor vehicle crashes each year.
They create ugly and massive linear scars featuring abandonment, crime, prostitution, drugs, and despair.
They destroy any hope of creating a sense of place (they are Anywhere USA non-places that no force on earth can stop from becoming strip commercial sprawl).
They chase away smaller and locally-owned retail shops.
They destroy the proximity needed for healthy levels of bicycling, walking, and transit because they disperse rather than agglomerate homes and shops and offices and culture.
They take away travel independence for those who cannot drive (such as seniors, children, and low-income).
And they degrade civic pride.
